Please let me know either using the feedback form on the web site or in response to the e-mail notice to members whether or not you expect to be there.  I'd like to know as soon as possible but definitely by Monday morning (8th) please, so that we can adjust the booking if necessary.

Wed 13th July - Chilli Nights

Chilli Night(s) - Wednesday 13th July!

The table is booked for our July meeting which will take place on Wednesday 13th. We last visited this restaurant in October 2019, before the pandemic put a stop to our meetings, so it's great to return there and we're sure of a warm welcome.

Aperitifs will be at the Mill Tavern from 7-ish. It's about ten minutes' walk to the restaurant or three minutes by car. Dinner is booked for 8 pm.

Please let me know either using the feedback form on the web site or in response to the e-mail notice to members whether or not you expect to be there. I'd like to know as soon as possible but definitely by Monday morning (11th) please, so that we can adjust the booking if necessary.

Chilli Night(s) always looks after us well. Hope to see you there!

Looking back to June, wasn't Gurkha Durbar fantastic? We have two great options in Grayshott so we may be back quite soon.

October meeting - Chill Nights - Tuesday 8th

It's October (well it will be tomorrow) and it's time to visit Chilli Nights, Wey Hill, Haslemere.  The table is booked for our October meeting which will take place on Tuesday 8th.  As usual when we're in this neck of the woods, we'll meet for aperitifs at the restaurant from 19:30-ish.  Dinner is booked for 20:30.

Please let me know either using the feedback form on the web site or in response to the e-mail notice to members whether or not you expect to be there.  I'd like to know as soon as possible but definitely by Monday morning (7th) please, so that we can adjust the booking if necessary.

Chilli Nights always looks after us well, but we couldn't assemble enough members to meet there as planned in June and a few of us went to Gurkha Durbar instead.  Coincidentally something similar happened last year.  Let's hope we can do better this time and have a great evening on 8th October - hope to see you there!

Chilli Nights - Tues 10 October

The table is booked! Our October venue is Chilli Nights, Weyhill, Haslemere, where we'll meet on Tuesday 10th.  Aperitifs will be at the restaurant from about 19:30 and then we'll aim to start dinner soon after 20:30.

Please would members let me know by Sunday 8th whether they expect to be there, either using the feedback page on the web site, or in response to the e-mail notice to be sent out shortly. As well as on-street parking on Weyhill and round St Christoper's Green, there's lots of space on the Wey Hill 'fairground'  car park off St Christopher's Road, down the side of Shahanaz; there's a map at the bottom of this page.

The restaurant's home page says "Our Restaurant has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and is fully licensed. Our menu has also been heavily revised and includes many new dishes as well as a few of our Chef's own specialities."  So as usual we can look forward to some interesting and tasty food, and maybe something new too.

Tuesday October 11 - Chilli Nights

The table is booked!  October sees us return to Chilli Night(s), in Haslemere, on Tuesday 11th.  We were last there in May, and it's consistently good.  Here's a link to a TripAdvisor review in November last year.  As usual for this end of Haslemere, which has a shortage of good pubs, we meet at the restaurant at 7:30 for 8, and aperitifs can take as long or as little as we like.

Members, let me know whether you expect to be there, either in response to the e-mail notice or through the feedback page on the web site.  I've booked for 10, but the restaurant can accommodate more if we give them sensible notice.  There's plenty of parking nearby, either on Wey Hill itself, round St Christopher's Green, or in the free car park on St Christopher's Road (by Shahanaz).

May meeting - Tue 10th - Chilli Nights

The table is booked - we return to Chilli Night(s) for our May meeting, on Tuesday 10th May, 7:30 for 8.  Due to the lack of a comfortable pub within walking distance, the table is booked early so that we can have aperitifs at the restaurant.  We were last there in November, when we enjoyed the food, lots of contrasting flavours, and generally had a great time.

Members, let me know whether you expect to be there, either in response to the e-mail notice or through the feedback page on the web site.  There's plenty of parking nearby, either on Wey Hill itself, round St Christopher's Green, or in the free car park on St Christopher's Road (by Shahanaz).

November 2015 report

We visited Chilli Night in Weyhill, Haslemere, for our November meeting.  Few of the southern contingent were able to make the journey, but we found the usual warm welcome and enjoyed a very good evening.  Once again, we experimented with a Tuesday evening rather than Wednesday and a slightly earlier start, dining at 20:00 rather than 20:30.  Due to the shortage of decent pubs in the Weyhill area, we met at the restaurant for pre-dinner aperitifs.

As usual, we asked the restaurant to choose the menu for us.  They did well, and while the main courses were all medium-hot rather than hot-hot, there was masses of flavour and the food delighted us.  The mixed starter included fish tikka, shamee kebab with spinach, onion bhaji and a mixed chat and puree - delicious flavours and a great start to the evening.

The main courses included Chicken Manchuria (sweet and sour sauce), Murghi Massala (includes some mince meat in the sauce), Chicken Tikka Moricha (cooked with chilli pickle)
Lamb Shatkora (lamb with limes).   Side dishes were good too - tomato and aubergine was unusual and tasty, three types of naan, dhal and three types of rice.  It was a very good meal, with contrasting flavours, and enjoyed by us all.

Next door to Chilli Night is something we haven't seen in Haslemere before - a brand new 'Indian'  shop with a range of unusual pickles, spices and ingredients.  It's also a general convenience store, offering newspapers, drinks and conventional groceries.

The Christmas meeting will be held in Petersfield, and should be on Tuesday 8th subject to table availability.

November - Chilli Nights, Haslemere

The table is booked!  Our November meeting will take place on Tuesday 10th at Chilli Night, Weyhill, Haslemere.  Because there's a shortage of decent pubs nearby, the table is booked at the restaurant for aperitifs from 19:00, and we'll eat at 20:00. The restaurant is about five minutes' walk from Haslemere station, and there's plenty of parking nearby, including the free area off St Christoper's Road turn off the main road beside Shahanaz.

Chilli Night produces some delicious food, as we found on our visit in January.  Here's the review of that visit.  Though attendance was slightly disappointing, with only 9 showing up, we had a thoroughly good evening and those that couldn't make it up the A3 from Petersfield missed a good one.

Because I've been away from my PC on Rugby World Cup duty, this notice is a few days later than intended.  Please let me know as soon as possible whether you'll be there, either using the feedback page on our website or in response to the mail notice sent to members.

Looking forward to a great evening with some not so chilly food!

Chilli Night(s) - not so chilly

We returned to Chilli Night(s) in Haslemere for our January meeting.  This was the first Curry Club visit since 2008, as we failed to raise a quorum in November 2013; in the interim, I've been there on several occasions after beer-related activities, and it's never failed to please me.   We changed our routine this time to have our pre-dinner drinks at the restaurant, rather than one of the local pubs, and everyone agreed that this was a good decision.  The restaurant gave us a friendly welcome, and we had plenty of time to relax without the need for a long trek just before dinner.   Turnout was lower than average, probably due to the distance from Petersfield.

As is our custom, the choice of dishes was left to the restaurant.  We weren't disappointed.  Starters were unusual off-menu items: spicy tandoor-cooked ayre fish, a spicy lentil patty similar in shape to a small burger, and a small puri made with naan flour and filled with spiced kofta-like minced meat.  All were delicious, and because we hadn't filled up first on papadums, we had plenty of appetite for the main courses that followed.

The main courses were more familiar but still very good: two sauced main dishes and two served with salad.  A rich lamb dhansak and a chicken bhuna were both extremely tasty, well-spiced and appreciated by all.  The garlic chilli chicken was lively - one of us needed emergency water and lager after encountering some of the chilli in the dish.  There also seemed to be a hint of Scotch Bonnet or naga-type chillis.  The final main dish was comprised breaded chicken strips - looked a little like octopus.  For me this was the least exciting of the four, probably because I didn't spot the sauce in a dish at the middle of the salver.  But I did enjoy the dhal, the naans - plain, garlic and keema, and the pilau and spinach rice that were served as side dishes.  Kingfisher on draught, Cobra in bottles, and a decent red wine were appreciated by all (except the drivers).

Going by the menu, the drinks list, the bill and the phone book, it's Chilli Night.  It's only Chilli Nights on the sign outside.   But whatever you call it, we had a great evening and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  Those that couldn't make it up the A3 missed a good one.

Chilli Night(s)!

Happy New Year, and the table is booked for Petersfield Curry Club's first event of 2015!  January will see our return after a Curry Club gap of (would you believe it?) six years to one of my favourite restaurants, Chilli Night or Nights in Weyhill, Haslemere.  Since we were last there, the pub situation hasn't improved - the Crown and Cushion is now a set of flats; the Red Lion has been the Inn on the Green and the latest Google StreetView pictures show it as the Apple Tree.

So to keep things sensible, we're going to meet at the restaurant for aperitifs from 19:30, and then dinner will be at 20:30 as usual.  Members - please let me know through the feedback page of the website, or by reply to the e-mail notice, whether you expect to make it or not.  Chilli Night(s) serves wonderful food but doesn't have a huge number of covers - we need to let them know how many we will fill, and not over- or under- promise on our booking.

Why the confusion over Chilli Night or Nights?   The logo says one thing but the sign outside says more!  Whatever, it's never failed to produce exciting food.

Details: the restaurant is on Weyhill, Haslemere, about 6 minutes' walk from the station.  There's parking on the street outside,  but when that's full, there's a free public car park at the fairground, just off St Christopher's Road.  A search on Google Maps suggests that the Curry Club (founder Pat Chapman, author of the Good Curry Guide) is located just over the road from that car park!

Looking forward to a great evening on 14th!

November and December

We planned to hold the November meeting on Wednesday 13th in Haslemere, visiting the Inn on the Hill (the one opposite the station) for aperitifs and then Chilli Nights for dinner.  We find ourselves low on numbers again so, sorry everyone, we've cancelled this time.

We expect to hold our Christmas meeting on 11th December in Petersfield, subject to availability of table. The chosen venue is Malabon, which we thoroughly enjoyed on our visits there in April and August.  As we're at that end of the town, and to help the less mobile, aperitifs will be taken at the Red Lion.  The date is very much in the Christmas party season, so we need an indication of numbers as soon as possible to make sure we can book a sufficiently-big table.   Please let us know by e-mail or through the feedback page on our website if you plan to be there. I need to know by 19:00 on 26th November, please.

Mentioning Christmas, please remember the Curry Club when shopping on Amazon - it costs nothing more to click through our Amazon shop, on our website, before choosing your purchases.  We may then - depending on what you choose - receive some funding for a future round of drinks.

And now a free giveaway.  Those who've seen me struggling with the bill at Curry Club meetings will know that I've built an iPhone app that will work out the tip and amounts per head depending on the remaining kitty.  This has now been published on the iTunes App Store, and you can find it here:

Chilli Night, Haslemere - 13 May 2009

The Inn on the Hill is a great place for pre-curry drinks, and their 1 Kg steak promotion looks massive - but maybe too much for me. But the aim of our visit was Chilli Night, and they didn't disappoint: lovely food - decent wine - average bill: great evening.

Excellent mixed starters with a delicious fresh chutney were followed by

Lamb Jalfrezi
Prawn Madras
Batak (Duck) Shashlik
Lamb Rogan
Garlic Chilli Chicken (my favourite)
accompanied by Bombay aloo and Tarka Dhal.

El Presidente insisted on chapatis and stuffed paratha. Your webmaster / blogmeister wanted garlic naan and plain rice. In the end, more of the chapatis were eaten than the plain rice and naan, so we concede to the wisdom of El Presidente.

It was a good evening. Next time: Gurkha Chautari, Liphook.

April meeting cancelled

The sad news of the death of Brian Barnes, former landlord of the Old Drum in Petersfield, and a good friend to many Curry Club members, meant that too few wanted to go ahead with the April meeting.

When I joined the Curry Club, the Drum was our regular drinking spot both before and after meetings, and it even served the meal on one occasion (or more?). After he left, we migrated to Foggys. He'll be missed by many.

Accordingly, we've postponed the visit to Chilli Night until our May date, Wednesday 13th May.

May meeting - Chilli Night, Haslemere

As usual, we had a fine evening at Chilli Night. Attendance was a little lower than expected, but the food was well varied: chicken jalfrezi, garlic chilli chicken, lamb rogan, Ayre karai, achari lamb and prawn madras. These were accompanied by a good selection of rice, lentil, vegetables, and naans.

Fine food, very well presented, and all it lacked was the appetite of Will to hoover up the excess. He missed his first meeting in over a year - I hope the family holiday made up for it.

Chilli Night - Haslemere

Times are a changing, the Inn on the Hill no longer looks about ready to tumble down, cause a landslide. Never looked like the place to secure an interest free loan either which is just as well, its now a trendy wine bar. After an aperitif here we wandered half a mile through the fog to Chilli Night.

Intimate PLACE, bar in one corner then 7 or 8 tables, comfy conservatory style wicker chairs to relax in. Indeed a casual ambience prevailed, the staff numbered 3 and the SERVICE was pleasant and efficient all evening. Proudly showed off their Masterchef 2006 award at the end of a very good meal too.

The house red was spicy, more so than the FOOD of which there was enough to keep the garrison at Krishnapur from starvation. A Mixed Starter included Onion bhaji burger, a melt in the mouth Chicken pakora and a sheekh kebab. Initial hunger pains sated. Then came the mains. Here’s what I ate; a mound of pilau rice, half a mixed vegetable bhaji, a good portion of a mushrooms, both dry and distinct in flavour, and an exquisite Saag Paneer…somehow I managed to squeeze the following onto my plate and into my stomach as well; a well behaved Garlic Chilli Chicken, an almondy Tikka Massala, an excellent zesty Lamb Shaktora, Chicken Bhuna and a late arrival!! Prawn Dhansak.

Chilli Nights selection was a real variety show, Prince Charles would’ve approved. Saag Paneer fit for royalty, super vegetables. At last I had a reason for visting Haslemere. If I land this job in selling cameras, I thought, I’ll go next week!

...Next week turned out to be next month, started work in Jessops, hence return visit, Mum and sis Katy in tow. Mum happy with Prawn Puree, I gnawed my way through succulent Tandoori Chicken quarter. Mains included tangy, Bolognese-a-like Murgi Massala, juicy Lamb Shatkora (FACT: Shatkora = lime, imported from Bangladesh!! not directly surely…can Parcel force arrange that sort of thing?) and a smooth, rich Korma. Veg included another Saag Paneer with delicious cauliflower cheese cream sauce plus good Mix Veg Curry.

...So I stop off on Sunday train back from London, footsore after walking Regents canal path. Pleasingly busy. Highlight a magnificent puffed roti, crisp on the outside doughy within. Achari Murgh, Chicken with pickling spices tasted refreshingly zesty and revitalising as did my vegetable dish. Brave little Button Mushrooms lightly fried with fresh tomato and spring onion. A fine ending to a weekend in which I took in the sights and sounds of the British Model Railway Club of Great Britain's annual expo at Ally Pally (Yes I did pack my anorak), as well as the hustle, bustle and smells of Bangla Town.

...Visited before another trip to the capital. I began with a rather neutral sheek kebab followed up by Lamb Tikka Jalfrezi balti, a bit of a mouthful, particularly when served in pan size of a bird bath! Pretty riotous blend of green chillies, spring onion, ground coriander, peppery and firey. However, Bhindi Bhajee, a bit simple - okra and tomato plonked in a medium curry sauce. Same went for Begun Tomato (substitute okra for aubergine). The Lamb Vindaloo, sharp and bitter tasting concluded a decent but unimaginative meal.

...Chilli Night is a regular and deservedly popular curry club haunt. Soon September's visit came around. Following a slightly longer pause than normal (a pause usually filled chomping on poppadoms, commenting on the strength of the lime pickle, viscosity of the mango chutney etc…) starters arrived followed closely by…poppadoms. I was enjoying first sustenance since a rather crumbly tuna sandwich at a bowling alley several hours earlier to care. Half an flat onion bhajia up to scratch but not a patch on a Pakora, delicate batter coating a succulent morsel of Chicken or Chicken Tikka covered in a thicker than yer average, spicy yoghurt marinade. Good savouries then 2 / 3 excellent curries. No.1 Garlic Chilli Chicken. Slices of tandoori chicken in dryish masala where sour chillies, sulphurous garlic, fried onions, peppers entwined to salivating effect. No. 2 Lamb Shatkora. Best yet. Quick, zingy at first, meat soaking up mellow limey bitterness after. I’d return to have these dishes alone – all to myself! Only a Shrimp Jalfrezi, bit up front, confused. Mild Vegetable Bhaji, distinctive, flavoursome. Tarka Dall, bold buttery, of ideal glutinous consistency. Parfumed yellow rice soaked up, supported meal very ably. Hats off to the chefs for demonstrating a real confidence in their cooking.

In SUMMARY the menu barely diverges from traditional curry but they do it well, one is always assured of quantity at the very least.

September meeting - Chilli Night

Our September venue was one of our favourite places, Chilli Night in Haslemere.

This was during the Rugby World Cup, but despite that, we had a good turnout. For the record Japan lost narrowly to Fiji (31-35) earlier that evening and then Italy narrowly beat Romania (24-18). Whether that bodes well for our Scots friends or not, I don't know. Their 40-0 loss to New Zealand doesn't promise much.

So to the food: we enjoyed our mixed starters, but would have preferred the poppadums first - ferocious lime pickle! Main courses were Garlic Chilli Chicken. Lamb Shakoora, and Prawn Jalfrezi, accompanied by Tarka Dhal and mixed vegetables -all really good.

A great evening: it's only the luxury of choice in the area that stops me visiting more often.
